What is in a name?
Have you ever prejudged or disliked someone because of their name? If you have an enemy or someone that has disappointed you in any way you automatically associate their name with however the past person affected you. When you hear a certain name, it can trigger a memory or thoughts of a person that has been a part of your life. It doesn’t always spark just memories; names can also have the ability to resurface emotions that have been forgotten or left behind. Yet the most important name that will hold more meaning than another is your own.
My name is Kristin. Kristin isn’t just a word people say when they are trying to hold my attention. My name holds more than my identity, it holds my integrity and self worth. No other word or adjective could be more accurate in describing me than my own name. If you are to look up my name you would find these results:
- “Your name of Kristin has given you an idealistic nature with a desire to help others.”
- “Your initiative often causes you to be the first to act when you see a need.”
- “Since you are impressionable and receptive, you feel the misfortunes of others very keenly.”
- “Being somewhat self-centered, you learn through your own experiences, as you rarely take advice from others.”
- “Yet, you are sensitive and very easily hurt and offended.”
- “You long for praise and appreciation for your efforts, but others find it difficult to understand you.”
In other websites my name also has a repeated meaning as “Follower of Christ.” Which if you were to compare that meaning to me, personally it is very accurate. Originating from the Latin language or “the dead language” the name Kristin has also become more and more popular and used throughout the world. Just from 2001-2008 there was an almost 500 person increase in the use of the name.
When I was born my mother named me after one of her closest friends, Kristy. According to my mom they were inseparable and best friends. In addition to being close with her, my mom looked up to her as a role model. Kristy was very kind hearted, sweet, and had the greatest faith than anyone that my mom met. Kristy, along with her family were full of faith and hope which overall inspired my mom to name me after Kristy. Being named after an amazing woman is such a blessing to me. I can only pray that one day I may be as great as a role model as she was to others.
Everyone is given a name, but it is by choice of what that name holds or stands for. When others say your name are they referring to your integrity and faithfulness? Or are others referring to your laziness and irresponsibility? Only you have the option of putting more meaning and significance to the name that people say behind and in front of you. It is all your choice, now you choice what your name stands for. How will you be defined when others say your name?
